My Review

This is my last review of 2016 and I am so happy that I chose this book. It really is the perfect uplifting story to see me into 2017!

So what did I think...

The beginning of this book is written with plenty of emotion and the revelation of Charlie's past is heartbreaking. I couldn't he!p but shed a few tears as I read. Charlie is such an engaging character who is beautifully written, Carol Wyer really brought her to life. Merecedes is perfect as Charlie's best friend their scenes together are so much fun as they go through the list. Bert has to get a special mention, I wish he was my pet.

As the story progressed I truly hoped that Charlie would get her happy ending. From meeting new friends and challenges Charlie faces everything head on and is definitely an inspirational character. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all about Charlie and her friends. There is some sadness but also laughs within the pages of this book and everything ends up balancing perfectly. The story moves along brilliantly and at times I found it hard to put down. The ending was just perfect and left me smiling for ages after.

A joy to read!

Five stars from me!

My Review

After reading The Late Blossoming of Frankie Green earlier this year I couldn’t wait to read the next book by Laura Kemp.

So what did I think...

There were so many moments where I was smiling especially the parts that reminded me of when I was younger. The bit about gagging on the smell of CK One particularly made me chuckle! Although there are some sad parts this book manages to be both witty and heartfelt. This is definitely a difficult balance to manage however Laura Kemp manages to do this brilliantly. I was pretty much hooked from the very first chapter.

I took to Vicky right away and it's pretty sad when she comes to realise she has been taken for granted by her boyfriend. Vicky has her flaws but it also makes her seem all the more real, after all no one is perfect!

Some of my favourite parts were the flashbacks to when Vicky and Mikey were teenagers. It was lovely to see the connection that they shared. I was pretty heartbroken for all of them as their pasts are revealed.

I really enjoyed reading the story from all three points of view. I found Kate was the most intriguing character. The relationship with her mum was one of the main things that made Kate feel so lost in her life. So it was interesting to see what had happened and how things would play out.

This book has everything from friendship, love, secrets and betrayal right through to new beginnings. I enjoyed immersing myself in all of their lives. Laura Kemp has written a wonderful account of friendship.

Five stars from me!

I loved this heartwarming story of friendship!

Review - Brake Failure by Alison Brodie

About the book

“Is it too late to tell him you love him when you are looking down the barrel of his gun?”

An English debutante transforms from Miss-Perfectly-Correct to criminally insane as she breaks the bonds of her rigid upbringing. Sheriff Hank Gephart tries to reel her in - but she’s out of control and she’s not hitting the brakes.

What happened to the genteel lady in twin-set and pearls? And why did she shoot Mr Right?

Brake Failure is set in 1999 in the months leading up to Y2K “meltdown” when the US government was spending $150 billion preparing for Armageddon As Lionel Shriver says in her novel, We Have To Talk About Kevin: "1999, a year widely mooted beforehand as the end of the world."

My Review

I had so much fun reading Brake Failure everything about it captured my attention and held it all the way through. Ruby is a complex character who goes on a pretty surprising journey to find out who she really is.

Hank is brilliant with Ruby, I loved their feisty clashes and sizzling chemistry. Ruby isnt always a 100% likeable but I think this works in her characters favour. I always find characters like Ruby more endearing and believable. Even if at times I want to shake some sense into them.

There are a myriad of supporting characters but they all equally bring something to the story. I especially loved Molly and her friendship with Ruby. A special mention has to go to Rowdy, he was great!

A bit of everything goes into this story and I found it so difficult to put down. I ended up finishing it really late one night as I had to know how it would all end. The plot moves brilliantly with a few surprises along the way. It was intriguing to start the book in the present (well the Y2K) and then work back to show the reader what actually happened. I really enjoyed the way this worked and how we get snippets of information as to how Ruby got herself into such a pickle!

A fast paced & fun filled adventure!

Five stars from me!

Thank you so much to Alison Brodie for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Review - Christmas at Lilac Cottage by Holly Martin

About the book:

Welcome to the charming seaside town of White Cliff Bay, where Christmas is magical and love is in the air…

Penny Meadows loves her home – a cosy cottage decorated with pretty twinkling fairy lights and stunning views over the town of White Cliff Bay. She also loves her job as an ice-carver, creating breathtaking sculptures. Yet her personal life seems frozen.

When Henry and daughter Daisy arrive at the cottage to rent the annex, Penny is determined to make them feel welcome. But while Daisy is friendly, Henry seems guarded.

As Penny gets to know Henry, she realises there is more to him than meets the eye. And the connection between them is too strong to ignore…

My Review

I have previously read a couple of books by Holly Martin and have always enjoyed them. As soon as I saw this book I knew I had to read it. So what did I think...

First of all I have to mention the front cover it really is stunning. The plot itself moves quickly and smoothly, I really didn't want to put the book down. I loved the idea of two people who had been burned in the past being brought together. Penny is a lovely, warm hearted person and I really hoped she could start afresh with someone and find some happiness. Henry is pretty perfect and I loved his relationship with Daisy their interactions were brilliant.

The chemistry Penny and Henry share is electric but also at the same time very romantic but will they get a happy ever after.

There were some comical moments that were brilliantly written and I couldn’t stop giggling!

If reading by the fire doesn't warm you this charming and heartfelt story will. The characters are lovingly written and by the end I felt as if I knew them. Holly Martin always manages to bring her characters to life and this book shows this perfectly.

This is the first book in the White Cliff Bay series and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. It will be lovely to revisit the place and the people who live there.

A gorgeous Christmas story!

Five stars from me!

Excerpt

My cell phone buzzed, and I checked the screen before answering. Mom. I smiled, hoping she was calling about all the gold and glitter desserts we’d ordered.

“Mom, how are you?”

“Clio what have you done?” her frosty tone froze me down to my bones. “You promised me you’d leave it alone, and now Isla comes into Puft and tells us all how she’s found a maze, and is going to restore it back into its former glory. You promised me, Clio.”

Damn it. I hadn’t thought to tell Isla to keep it hushed up for now. To be honest, I hadn’t expected her to mention it to anyone, least of all my own mother.

I took a steadying breath, “They don’t know anything about it, Mom. Isla stumbled on it and showed Micah, and they announced it to all of us on Christmas Eve. There was nothing I could do, they found it by pure accident. And I didn’t mention a word about it, I just changed the subject and hoped they’d forget.”

Mom sighed, a world-weary, I-can’t-handle-this-any-more kind of sound. I was at a loss for words and was bone-weary about it all myself. Hiding someone else’s secret was exhausting, especially when I didn’t know what it was exactly.

Mom’s delicate health concerned me, and I worried about what she’d do if she felt cornered, but surely it had to come out. It’s not as though the town folk didn’t know… They did, and they kept their lips pressed tight when questioned over it. And me, her own daughter, wasn’t trusted enough to confide in. It was mind bending.

“Mom, look. I know it’s difficult for you and I’m not trying to push you or anything, but don’t you think it’s time you told me? Cedarwood is getting busier by the day, we’ve got guests booked to stay in the lodge soon. We’ve got parties and weddings planned. I can’t keep it a secret forever, people will stumble over it if they hike, and especially as Isla clears the grounds come spring. Don’t you think it’s better if I know what happened?” She didn’t say anything but her breathing was audibly shallow. With a soothing voice I tried a different tack, “Why don’t you come visit, and we’ll find the maze together?”

My Review

It has been a pleasure to read this series of books. I have enjoyed getting to know the characters but also spending time at Cedarwood Lodge. By the end it actually felt like it was a real place, Rebecca Raisin really brought it to life with her descriptive writing.

All of the characters were well written but my favourite has to be Clio. Her determination to bring Cedarwood Lodge back to life has been a joy to read.

The story has the perfect combination of friendship, romance and new beginnings. Everything flowed perfectly and I read it in one sitting, I just didn't want to put it down!

By the end I was left with happy tears and it really was a perfect end to the series.

Five stars from me!

A delightful and charming story!

My Review

I was intrgued by the description for this book and was looking forward to reading it. The plot was fun and interesting although it did bother me a little at first that she was with Jack but having dreams about James. I really enjoyed the dream sequences they were detailed, fun and really helped move the story along.

I have to say I kept changing my mind about Katie. One minute I would like her but then she would do something pretty frustrating. This is not necessarily a bad thing as her flaws definitely make her character more believable. James has to be my favourite character he is totally likeable. Some of the romance is missing from a couple of pairings but the story does make up for it.

With it being a shorter story I did finish this book pretty quickly. Even though it isn't exactly perfect my attention was kept throughout.

If you are looking for a quick and light hearted read then look no further!

Four stars from me!

My Review

After reading The Little Village Bakery earlier this year and getting to know Mollie and Dylan I just had to read the next book in the series. Although this is the second book it can be read as a standalone but if you get chance definitely take a look at the first story.

I loved the village of Honeybourne and the people who live there. Once again we see the villagers come together and I loved that spirit of community. It was especially lovely to catch up with Millie and Dylan. I was always intrigued by Spencer and it was great to get more insight into his personality.

There are a few characters to follow but their stories never got complicated or felt like I had to keep a track of what was happening. The addition of Darcie to the story was great and added more depth to the plot. I did wonder where her story would go and I hoped that it wouldn't lead in a certain direction. I'm going to stop now as I really don't want to ruin the story.

It always makes a story more interesting if you see the story from different points of view. This book follows a few different characters and I guess if I had to pick a favourite it would be Spencer. He is such a likeable character and I hoped he would get his happy ending.

The story moved at a good pace and to be honest I was halfway through before I even realised. Tilly Tennant really has created a charming village and a lovely variety of characters.

Christmas at the Little Village Bakery is a cosy, entertaining story that is just right for the festive season!

Four stars from me!

Excerpt

Ming was trying to calculate their good-byes. Should she say it had been nice seeing him? Probably. Common courtesy, at least, was called for. What if he tried to do that kissing on the cheek thing that guys do? What if she got flustered and turned, brushed her lips against his? What if—and then, entirely against her will, her mind filled with images of them kissing up against the brick building, her back to the wall, arms wrapped around Charlie’s neck, Charlie and his ridiculous scarf and his ridiculous jacket wrapped around her, keeping her warm even without a coat, right there between the spot-lit posters for The Shop Around the Corner and Some Like It Hot.

You have a good night, now,” Marcy said as she held the door for them, snapping Ming back to reality.

Ming smiled and said a shaky “Merry Christmas” as she followed Charlie through the exit into the night.

And then she stopped.

Wow,” he breathed next to her.

Endless enormous snowflakes floated down, a good three inches already piled up on the ground, even though it had been bare when she’d gone into the theater. It was dark, quiet, the lot almost empty at this hour on the holiday. Everyone else was home or watching Aftershock 5: Megatsunami or whatever the hell was playing over at the multiplex. There was a click behind them. Marcy walked around to her car, parked beside the building. She climbed in and pulled slowly away, wipers swishing. A breeze swirled, spinning the flakes through the air around them.

I do miss this,” she said, stepping out from under the overhang in front of the theater and turning her face to the sky.

Me, too. I haven’t seen it snow like this in years.”

Oh, crap. Why had she said anything? She was practically asking him to bring it up.

I’m in California now,” he added.

And there it was.

Yeah. I’m, uh…” In California, too, and actively avoiding you.

Yeah, it’s okay. Congrats on the getting into the doctoral program, by the way.”

She gave him a quizzical look.

He looked down, shuffled some snow with his foot. “I might have cyber-stalked you a little. I mean, I don’t think it really counts as stalking. I found your Twitter profile. And sometimes I see you comment on Facebook. We have like eighteen mutual friends.”

Nineteen, actually. Not, again, that she was keeping track on purpose. Just. You know, you notice these things.

Anyway,” he said, looking up, “Good for you. USC’s a great school.”

Yeah, well so is—” Crap she wasn’t supposed to know he was at Caltech.

He gave her a lopsided grin. “You knew.”

Dammit.

I’ve been busy.”

It’s okay, Ming. I didn’t really expect…”

You could’ve looked me up.”

Would you have wanted that?”

She said nothing. She wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she was cold.

Where’d you park? I’ll walk you to your car.”

Was he kidding?

I can walk myself to my car, Charlie. I’m a grown woman.” In the interest of being able to say she’d at least been polite, she thrust out her hand. “It was nice seeing you.”

He shook it. She gave him a curt nod, then turned and walked toward the lot on the other side of the building. Unfortunately, Charlie Brown followed. Good grief.

I told you,” she said, looking back at him, “I’m fine.”

He nodded behind her. There was one other car in the lot. His mom’s old Corolla, parked at the opposite end.

Oh.”

So I guess… I guess good-bye, then,” he said, almost sadly. Which was rich, coming from the guy who had rejected her. No, Charlie, we’re not going to be pals back in SoCal. So sorry. Seriously, she wanted to ask him what his deal was. But not as much as she wanted to get into her car and turn the heat on. She hadn’t dressed for lingering out in the cold.

The imagined scene between the movie posters came back unbidden.

Yeah, bye,” she snapped, squelching it.

She stalked to her dad’s Accord, which she had borrowed for the occasion, pulling her sweater sleeves down over her hands for warmth.

She never could figure out what had possessed Charlie to handle the whole prom thing the way he had. If anything, she had been extra nice to him in school. She had, for instance, never once mentioned the time freshman year when he had asked her to a dance only because his parents made him ask someone. They were concerned he wasn’t being “social” enough. So he’d gone and asked the biggest nerd he could find with an XX genotype. And she’d never even brought it up. Fortunately, she had turned him down with some excuse about visiting cousins that weekend (really, what did he expect, coming up to a girl he’d never spoken to outside of class and asking her on a date?), but she’d felt bad when she learned his folks put him up to it (Brian tipped her off). And, actually, in a weird way, it was what made her notice him. What made him stand out from the rest of their dorky peers as someone bordering on relatable.

After that, she sat with him at lunch sometimes, called him if she missed class to get the assignment, passed him the occasional caricature she’d doodled of their teacher in Advanced Bio because she knew it’d make him laugh. It had been the start of what became a real friendship. What she had thought was a real friendship.

Her car was so covered, if there had been others there, she would have had trouble picking hers out. Fortunately, the snow was wet and lightly packed, so it only took a quick sweep of the brush to clear the windows. She willed herself not to look back at Charlie as she worked, though she heard his engine start up and saw the glow of his headlights lighting up in the corner of her eye.

She took a deep breath and let it out. She knew she was fooling herself if she thought it hadn’t affected her to run into him. But there would be lots of time to process her resurfacing adolescent angst and whatever else bobbed up with it. Right now, she just wanted to get the hell out of there.

She dropped into the seat, slipped the belt into the buckle, slid the key into the ignition, and turned it. All one smooth motion. Only one problem. The car didn’t start.
