Last year I reviewed Puzzle Girl by Rachael Featherstone and I'm happy to be re-posting my review along with sharing the brand new cover!
Love is a riddle waiting to be solved... Clued-up career girl Cassy Brookes has life under control until one disastrous morning changes everything. When she finds herself stuck in a doctor s surgery, a cryptic message left in a crossword magazine sends her on a search to find the mysterious puzzleman behind it. Cassy is soon torn between tracking down her elusive dream guy, and outwitting her nightmare workmate, the devious Martin. Before I had children I was always doing puzzles whether it was in a puzzle book or a puzzle game on a games console. So I loved this aspect to the story although I have to admit I was never that great at the cryptic puzzles.
Cassy is a fun and entertaining character especially as she comes up with more and more outlandish excuses in her quest to solve the clues as to who her puzzle-man is. I loved her friendship with Dan and when they got together I was always smiling. At one point I was reading this book on the bus and had to stop myself from laughing. One of the things that is great about Cassy is that she does have flaws and her mission to find puzzle-man kind of gets in the way of her life, friends and family. I think at times we all get carried away with things at times but Cassy goes a step further I guess! I have to say I was completely with Cassy and her notebook obsession. Even with the list making to an extent, I wouldn't say I make lists for everything but it's always fun making a to-do-list.
Cassy's rivalry with Martin was a definite highlight of the book and it was very entertaining seeing their spirited exchanges. On the odd occasion I have to admit I was right there with her as she lists the ways in which to take him down. Although there were other times when I wished that Cassy would have just had a word with him instead of overreacting.
The emails at regular intervals throughout the book were a lovely touch, I especially liked that Cassy would write a draft copy of what she really wanted to say but would obviously never send. It was lovely visiting London via the book of course as we went there last year and it was great to be reminded of our trip. Especially as we went on the DLR and my little boy really enjoyed the journeys on it.
At the time of reading I was still suffering from jet lag so I was wondering how much of the book I would actually read before my bed started calling. However I couldn't put this book down and I managed to finish it in two days. My attention was kept pretty much throughout with Cassy's crazy antics. I was left with a smile and if you are in need of a giggle then why not pick up Puzzle Girl and help Cassy discover her Puzzle Man!

Full of laughs, embarrassing moments (poor Cassy) and a little bit of romance makes Puzzle Girl so much fun!
Rachael Featherstone was born and raised in Woodford. After reading Mathematics at New College, Oxford university, Rachael went to work in research. When Rachael's mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2012, Rachael decided to take a chance, quit her job, and fulfil a life time ambition to write a novel. She went back to university and completed a Masters in English Literature and had several short stories published. Rachael now lives in Hampshire with her Husband, Tim.
