Trap by Lilja Sigurdardóttir @lilja1972 #BlogTour @OrendaBooks @annecater #Review

I'm thrilled to be one of the stops on the blog tour for Trap by Lilja Sigurdardóttir and sharing my review today. First of all let's take a look at the description for the book...

Happily settled in Florida, Sonja believes she’s finally escaped the trap set by unscrupulous drug lords. But when her son Tomas is taken, she’s back to square one … and Iceland.

Her lover, Agla, is awaiting sentencing for financial misconduct after the banking crash, and Sonja refuses to see her. And that’s not all … Agla owes money to some extremely powerful men, and they’ll stop at nothing to get it back.

With her former nemesis, customs officer Bragi on her side, Sonja puts her own plan into motion, to bring down the drug barons and her scheming ex-husband, and get Tomas back safely. But things aren’t as straightforward as they seem, and Sonja finds herself caught in the centre of a trap that will put all of their lives at risk…

Set in a Reykjavík still covered in the dust of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption, and with a dark, fast-paced and chilling plot and intriguing characters, Trap is an outstandingly original and sexy Nordic crime thriller, from one of the most exciting new names in crime fiction.

Trap picks up pretty much where Snare left off and we see Sonja in Florida with her son. However her peace doesn't last for long and soon enough Sonja has a whole new set of problems to deal with. I do have to mention that it might be a good idea to pick up a copy of Snare first. In a way I think Trap can be read as a standalone but I do feel that you will get a better understanding fully knowing the characters back stories. Also Snare is a brilliant book and I would hate for anyone to miss out!

The pacing of Trap was good not necessarily fast paced but there was something happening all the time to keep me invested in the story. As we experience both the highs and lows with Sonja along with seeing her determination to get both herself and her son Tomas out of the tricky situation she has found herself in. I think that Sonja and Thomas are the heart of this book with Lilja Sigurdardóttir creating a wonderful mother/son bond that made both characters so engaging. Along with increasing the tension as the reader so desperately wants to see them reunited.

Trap is wonderfully translated by Quentin Bates and is a real pleasure to read from the cleverly crafted plot to wondering if the characters will ever get themselves out of trouble. There is danger, complex plans and manipulations running throughout this book that made for some compelling reading. I loved seeing all the little threads coming together although there were a few surprises and tense moments along the way that easily kept me on my toes.

Having this strong group of real, flawed but ultimately engaging characters easily sets this story apart for me. They are strong, intelligent and highly capable personalities who find themselves in some impossible situations. Just like in Snare I was fascinated and intrigued by the journey that I was taken on.

Trap is tense, very cleverly put together and I can guarantee you will fly through the pages of this book!

With thanks to Anne Cater and Orenda Books for my copy.

I also highly recommend picking up a copy of Snare by Lilja Sigurdardóttir and you can read my review here
